Man charged with fatal Child Abuse of
girlfriend’s son

ESSEX, MD  –  A man has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son in Maryland.

Baltimore County police said they received a call on June 29 for a cardiac arrest in Essex, Maryland.  The caller, identified as David Marvin Hass Jr., 34, was babysitting his girlfriend’s son and 5-year-old daughter while she was working when the child stopped breathing, police said.

The boy, identified in a probable cause statement as Damien Landrum, was taken to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a half hour after arriving.

Hospital investigators noticed the child had multiple bruises on his face, arm, stomach and back, the probable cause statement said.  Due to the age and injuries observed on the child, the Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit was asked to investigate.

According to the probable cause statement, Haas told investigators that the boy had “pooped himself,” and that he placed the child in the shower.  Haas told investigators that he was gone for approximately 4-5 minutes, and when he returned, he found the boy face down in the tub, not breathing, the statement said.

An autopsy returned to police on July 8 revealed the boy’s bowels were torn and his pancreas was split in two pieces from the force used to inflict the injuries, that statement said.  The cause and manner of death was determined to be multiple injuries and homicide.

Homicide Unit detectives determined that the injuries the boy suffered were inconsistent with the account of events given to police by Haas.

Haas was arrested Tuesday and is charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in death and first-degree murder.  He is held without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center pending trial.

  1. I know mug shots aren’t meant to be the most attractive ‘selfie’ of your life, but holy crap I would not let that man babysit my dog, let alone my 2 year old. It sounds like it wasn’t the first time either. The fact that the bruising seemed to be in different stages of healing, the abuse had been going on for a while.

It makes me sick to think of the mindset you’d have to be in to be able to raise a hand to a little child. Defenceless, terrified and likely crying for his mama….who left him in the worst hands she possibly could have. (Subjective opinions as I don’t know much about this case; just had to comment on how unfair this all is).

    1. Grainne, Thank You for this comment, it brought back a bunch of memories.
When we had my oldest boy, we knew nothing about the period of uncontrollable crying, and nobody ever acted like they knew of any such thing, so it leads me to believe that a lot of people was mean to their baby, and probably stuck it in the bassinet with a bottle and shut the door.
But not us, anyway it probably went on several days(well nights) when we was out of formula and I probably offered for her to go get the formula, because I didn’t see how she was handling it. (By the way I got up with all 4 of my boys)
Anyway it happened again several nights later and she said “We are NOT staying here, we’ll all ride to the store and back”.
Before we got home Robert Jr was fast asleep and didn’t blink an eye when we finally decided to attempt going into the house.
Funny thing is this went on quiet a while, and one night we got pulled over and the cop was nearly up to me when my wife started waving and quietly said please don’t wake our son up, and he had me come out and asked and I explained, and he said how long you folks been doing this( and he had already got a close look at Robert Jr.
I told him about how and and we just lived a few blocks over.
He said so you do this every night or so, and always go to he store? I said yes, and he said well I think that why you never turned your lights on, it’s bright here and back to your house.. ( and I could have had a heart attack)
NO Grainne, I can not imagine anyone that would hurt a Child.
      Sincerely,
      Robert
